Alonzo Simmons Sr., of Palmer Park, MD, was the fifth child born to the late Abraham Sr., and Richardine Geneva Simmons in Charleston SC on February 14, 1937. He was called home in the early morning hours Tuesday, August 23, 2022, peacefully in his sleep at Largo Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.

Alonzo graduated from Phelps High School in Washington DC in 1956. Soon after graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served from July 19, 1956, until July 18, 1960. A couple years later he met the love of his life, Shelby Jean Johnson. They were married on September 29, 1962, and were blessed to be happily married for over 50 years at the time of her death. During the course of their marriage, they had three sons, Alonzo Jr. “Lonnie”, Erik, and Christopher “Chris”.

Alonzo worked for the Federal Government for 34 years, retiring from the Department of Commerce in 1992. He was able to enjoy 30 years of retirement before his passing. He has been a member of Parkview Baptist Church since the 1970s and enjoyed singing in the Men’s Chorus.

Dad wasn’t much of a traveler, but he really enjoyed being at home and sitting on the front porch talking trash with his friends like Mr. Meachum, Mr. Matthew Moore and Mr. Richard Vines, who have all preceded him in death. He also spent quite a bit of time talking to Mr. B.J. Floyd (a neighbor of over 50 years) next door. He loved watching sports on his big-screen TV in the family room. He also grew to love talking on the phone to family members and friends.

The passing of his wife Shelby Jean in February of 2013 was really tough on him, but with the love and support of his family, he got through it. He was always most proud of his three sons and would tell anybody within earshot when he got the chance.

Alonzo is survived by his three sons Alonzo Jr. (Dionne), Erik (Andrea) and Chris, and his seven grandchildren Brian, Brianna, Alonzo III “Tre’”, David, Donovan, Abria, Erik “Elisha”, and one sister, Pastor Mary Ann Manigault of Charleston SC. He was preceded in death by all of his brothers, Leroy, Henry, Johnnie, Jackie, George, and most recently Jesse just a few months ago. In addition, his sister Evelyn Rich also preceded him in death.
