Obituary for Alphonso Davenport
Alphonso Lee Davenport was the eldest child born to the late Samuel E. Davenport Sr., and the late Mary L. Davenport on July 15, 1944, in Charleston, South Carolina. He transitioned peacefully in his sleep, early Wednesday morning, February 15, 2023.
Alphonso, affectionally known as Al, spent his early years in South Carolina. At a young age, the family relocated to Washington, DC where he attended DC Public Schools. He graduated from McKinley Senior High School.
After graduation, Al enlisted in the US Air Force. While serving in the US Airforce he received several awards, commendations, and medals for his outstanding service. He received an honorable discharge on September 23, 1966.
After leaving the US Air Force AL attended Howard University for a short while. He worked for C & P Telephone Co. (Verizon) as a Central Office Technician and retired from there in 2009. As a lifelong learner with a hunger and thirst for knowledge, he was always taking classes in his field of work to provide excellent service to his customers.
On June 20, 1981, Al entered in holy matrimony with Lorraine Wallace of Washington, D.C. He was blessed to help raise his two stepdaughters, Tanya and Letrisha, as his own. He was also blessed with grandchildren. Al and Lorraine were later divorced.
Later in life, Al accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord as Savior. He attended Greater Faith Outreach Ministries until he became bed ridden.
Al is remembered as being a great big brother, uncle, father figure, grandfather, disciplinarian, and an all-around fun-loving guy. He always had a big heart for children, spending quality time playing, teaching, and encouraging them along the way. We called him “Al the kiddies’ pal.” When it came to education, he was your biggest supporter.
In his free time, Al was a member of a local bowling league, played cards, went fishing, put together puzzles and model airplanes. He also loved watching movies, traveling, taking cruises, and hand dancing throughout the DMV. As the patriarch of the family, Al hosted the annual 4th of July family cookout and crab feast. He was independent, self-taught, and great with fixing and building things around the house. Al was also one of the few people who still could read a map to get around the city.
Alphonso was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Shirley M. Davenport, and Samuel E. Davenport Jr. (Taloria), half siblings Bobby Davenport and Ronald E. Davenport, and stepdaughter Tania Pauline Wharton. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving siblings, Tony R. Davenport (Marcelina, predeceased), Yvette (Bernard) Marshall, Joyce Metcalfe (Howard, predeceased) and Karen Davenport; half siblings, Michael A. Davenport, Mary June Taylor, Kenneth L. Davenport, and Sheila M. Koonce; stepdaughter Letrisha Wallace and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, and friends.
