Annie Mae Stanton (Ann) was born on April 15, 1932, in Hunter Township - Clinton, South Carolina; she was the youngest child of the late Annie Sophie Nance and Frank Attaway. She entered eternal rest on January 3, 2023.
In the mid-1930’s her family relocated to Washington, DC, where she attended both Catholic and DC Public Schools (Cardozo). It was in DC that her two eldest children, Jack and Jacqueline, were born, and she met and married Lewis Darrell Stanton on June 18, 1955. Three children were born from that union: Lewis Darrell Stanton, Jr. (deceased), Tina M. Stanton-Quick, and Anthony D. Stanton.
Annie had a strong, fiery, and vibrant soul, and a big heart. Many lessons were learned through sharing her life. Those who chose to embrace them were empowered. She played a significant role in raising some of her Grandchildren. Her wisecracks were her way of letting you know she cared and was doing well.
After living in Quantico, Va., for a short time, as a military family (USMC) they moved to the West Coast. Eventually purchasing a home in Palo Alto, California. Ann began working in retail while on the West Coast. She returned (with her children) to Washington, DC. In 1966.
In DC, she worked at the Hecht Co. and eventually left for a career at the DC Department of Human Services, retiring in 1997. She was a crossword puzzle fanatic. She loved music and had been a member of a local Gospel Choir (in the 1980s), which she enjoyed. In later years, as a car passenger, Ann would act as a self-designated “co-pilot”, giving strong unsolicited input to the driver.
Ann is preceded in death by her estranged husband, Lewis; her (infant) son Lewis, Jr.; Siblings: Katie Mae Hendricks, John Willis (JW) Ferguson, and Richard Lee Ferguson; Granddaughter, Tanganika Stanton.
Ann leaves to cherish her memory and honor her life, four Children: Jack Ferguson, Jacqueline Jackson, Tina Quick (Kevin), and Anthony Stanton Grandchildren: Andre’ Ferguson (Dawn), Raymond Ferguson, Bernard Williams (LeeAnn), Jeffery Day, Sherise Ferguson (Sharon), Yvonne Stanton, Varshae Stanton, and Kenneth Johnson; Great-grandchildren: Breyana Kelly, Lindale Gordon, Kevin Thomas, Miah Gordon, Lamine Yassi, Taylor Ferguson, and Tristan Ferguson; Great-great grandchild: Alijah Ferguson, and a host of nieces and nephews; Family-in-Love: Linda Brown-Edwards, Roland Edwards, Sade Williams, and many other friends and loved ones.
