Obituary for Barbara Jean Armstrong (Johnson)

Barbara Jean Armstrong was born on April 13, 1942, to the late Lucille Johnson in Washington, D.C. As a proud Washingtonian, she attended D.C. public schools and graduated from Eastern High School. She met and married Tyrone Armstrong and from that union, two sons were born, Kevin and Kurt. Barbara was a resident of Glenarden, Maryland for more than 50 years.

Barbara began her professional career with the Department of the Navy as a Clerk. Over the next 36 years, she ascended through the Federal Government, finally retiring from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1997. During her time in federal service, she actively participated in the Women’s Executive Leadership Program and Blacks in Government.

Barbara accepted Christ at an early age and later joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Glenarden. As a member of the church, she served on the usher board, participated in feeding the homeless, and visited the sick and shut-in. In 2009, she joined Woodstream Church in Mitchellville where she enjoyed attending the early worship service and fellowshipping with her church family.

Throughout her life, Barbara was heavily involved in making a difference in her beloved community. She fueled her passion as a founding member of the National Council of Negro Women Mitchellville-Bowie Section. Additionally, in 2003 Barbara began serving on the Glenarden City Council where she was instrumental in the early planning of the Woodmore Towne Center at Glenarden.

In her retirement years, Barbara stayed busy with her many interests and hobbies such as golfing, line dancing, gardening, water aerobics, and Tai Chi. Barbara also had a love of black and white Western movies and TV shows. She spent time with her family and friends, traveling, eating at restaurants, and playing games. Her greatest joy in life came from her three grandchildren who were the light of her life. She enjoyed spending time with the kids and cooking for them. She also enjoyed taking them to parks, plays, and the movies.

On May 8, 2022, Barbara transitioned to be with the Lord, leaving to cherish her legacy and memory, her sons, Kevin L. Armstrong (Joyce) and Kurt Armstrong; three grandchildren, Jasmine D. Armstrong, Kevin L. Armstrong ll, and Jada T. Armstrong; cousins, Saundra Smith and Donna Sterling (Ted); life-long friends, Althea “Pudden” Washington and Patricia Williams; and a host of relatives and friends.
