Obituary for Charles Wilton Jones

Charles Wilton Jones, of Temple Hills Maryland, gained his heavenly wings, Monday, July 4, 2022.

Charles was born on July 14, 1933, in Halifax County, North Carolina to William and John Edna Jones. He was the third of 8 children. Charles grew up in Roanoke Rapids, NC and accepted the Lord at an early age. Charles was educated in the Halifax County Public Schools. He joined the United Stated Army in 1955 during the Korean War. He often said he thanked God for his skills as a mechanic. Because of this he was never sent to Korea but helped the troops here at home. Once discharged, he joined the Washington, DC National Guard.

Charles moved to Washington, DC after his discharge from the Army. He worked for the Department of Interior, National Parks Division, for over 30 years in many roles, beginning as a mechanic and ending as the Chief of Safety for the National Capitol Region. During this time, he received many awards and accolades for his remarkable service. Charles took a break for a couple of years in the early ‘60’s to open his own Gulf Gas Station in Enfield, NC. Something unheard of for a man of color in those days. Charles later opened a Sunoco Service Station in Oxon Hill, Md.

Charles met and married his lifetime love, Jennie Hockaday Jones in 1955. Through their union, four children were born, Rev. C.L. Jones Pastor (Evangeline), Victor A. Jones (Tonya), Sheila Jones Brooks (Timothy) and Brenda Richardson (Kentrell). Charles and Jennie were loving parents and givers to anyone in need including, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Charles and Jennie decided, later in life to give their hearts to other children in need by becoming foster parents to over 50 children. Jenee White Jones, was one of those children and they developed such a special bond that they adopted Jenee, giving them their 5th child.

Charles will be laid to rest next to his spouse, Jennie, on July 16, 2022, at 11:00 am at Shearin Chapel Baptist Church on Thelma Road in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The viewing will begin at 10:00am.
