The Life and Legacy of
Dirk Cornelius McKan

Dirk Cornelius McKan of Upper Marlboro, Maryland went home to be with the Lord on July 14, 2022. He was born on March 23, 1952, in Washington, D.C. to the late Almentia Williams McKan and Nathaniel Nicholas McKan. Baptized and raised Catholic, Dirk was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and attended their elementary school. In 1970, he graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington D.C. While in high school, Dirk was an active participant in the Civil Air Patrol Search and Rescue Program, where he also learned to fly small planes. Unfortunately, Dirk’s dream of flying was cut short because of vision problems. He and his childhood friends, Earl, Tyrone, Rosa and Pam spent many weekends and summers camping out military style, culminating into life-long friendships.

Dirk was a studious, focused youth, always looking towards the future. He began his career at AT&T Telecommunications soon after his high school graduation. He started in the mailroom and took night classes in Computer Science at Howard University. His willingness to learn and to tackle any assignment did not go unnoticed. He was quickly promoted to the Information Technology (IT) department, then shortly thereafter into management. As a Systems Analyst, he went on to train and supervise employees in AT&T’s Systems Departments in Cincinnati, OH, and Atlanta, GA. After 25 plus years, he retired from AT&T as a Senior Systems Analyst in the D.C. area. After retiring from AT&T Telecommunications, he was soon employed as a supervisor in GEICO’s Information Technology (IT) department.

Dirk married the late Francine Perry McKan on July 12, 1980, and was blessed with a son, Christopher D. McKan, in 1984. Francine and Dirk loved traveling, bid whist card parties, and gatherings with their family and many friends. Later in life, his grandsons became his greatest joy.

Dirk leaves a rich legacy of love to cherish his memory: His loving son, Christopher D. McKan; grandsons, Christopher D. McKan, Jr. and Shia Carter Pete; devoted sister, LaVerne M. Tucker (Lawrence B., Jr.); brother-in-law, Michael Perry (deceased); sisters-in-law, Wanda “Trudy” Robinson (Terry), Pamela Bates (Larry, deceased), Dorene “Renie” Black (Reginald); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
