Ernest Alphonse Rodgers was born on March 27, 1928 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and he transitioned peacefully at his home in Maryland on May 3, 2022. He was the fourth of five children of Charles and Lucy Rodgers. As a young man, Ernest enjoyed playing many sports including cricket, football and boxing and attended Calabar College in Kingston. In 1955, Ernest emigrated to the United Kingdom and settled in London where he married Valerie (Pearl) Cole and raised their family of three children, Lorraine, Anthony and Ruel.

Ernest always enjoyed a party and facilitated a social club in North London where local Caribbean friends congregated for organized events. Ernest was an expert in all sports but Cricket was his first love. He attended several Cricket matches while living in Jamaica and in London. Those who knew Ernest well also know that he was a fitness buff and he could always be found in the gym working on his strength routines and socializing with fellow members. Ernest served as a postal worker for the Royal Mail for 30 years before emigrating again with Valerie to the United States and settled in the Bronx, New York. Ernest worked for JP Morgan Chase as an accounting clerk before retiring in 1989. He and Valerie relocated to Springdale, Mayland in 1998 to be near their grandchildren.

As a retiree, Ernest became a devoted grandfather. He and Valerie doted on their grandsons and enjoyed caring for them after school. Ernest also became the neighborhood grandfather, babysitter and bus driver as he shuffled the grandkids and their friends back and forth from school. All the teachers knew Ernest well as he was always first in line for school pickup!

Ernest is survived by his three children Lorraine Rodgers, Anthony Rodgers and Ruel Rodgers, daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Liz) Rodgers, grandchildren Niles Rodgers and Marcelus Rodgers and many nieces and nephews. Ernest will always be remembered for his warm smile, caring manner and welcoming charm.
