Ethel Farbish Keys was born on June 26, 1929 to Ethel Curry and Earl Farbish in El Paso, TX. Ethel spent most of her childhood with her grandparents Jessie & Precious Curry, known as Mama and Papa Curry. Ethel spoke fluent Spanish and often visited Mexico as a child. In 1947, Ethel graduated from Douglass Grammar & High School located in El Paso, TX.
On September 6, 1949, Ethel married Theodore Keys in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Because of Theodore’s military commitment, the Keys family relocated to Germany and later Japan before returning stateside. The Keys family would later purchase the infamous ‘801 Booker Place’ family home in Seat Pleasant, MD. There, Ethel and Theodore, affectionately known as ‘Nana’ and ‘Hey-Dad,’ would host the best parties in the neighborhood.
While residing at ‘801 Booker Place,’ Ethel worked for the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) as a security guard until 1991 when she retired as a Sergeant to take care of her husband as his health declined. Ethel was truly the life of the party. She loved to dance and decorate. Ethel was also known to be “Out of Sight” as she was always dressed to impress. Nana loved children and assisted with raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore F. Keys. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her 2 children; Dr. Iris R. Keys and Theodore “Teddy” Keys (Shaaron); 5 grandchildren: Kiera Gadson, KaTrina Scott (Ruben), Angela Mosley, LaMar Mitchell (Dannyell) & Jeanine Keys; 8 Great-Grandchildren: Christina Williams (Brian), Duane Robinson Jr. (Dana), Celia Hinkle (Kevin), Jada Mitchell, Josee Mitchell, Jayden Crawford, Tyson Crawford and Kori Gaskins; 9 Great-Great Grandchildren: Braylon, Cymone, Demi, Kevin Jr., Devyn, Karter, Tyler & Kori; her close friends Doris and Margaret; her extended family Sherrie, Mark, Mia, Mariah and Mikayla and a host of family and friends.
