Obituary for George Henry Joiner

Mr. George Henry Joiner, 84, of Glenarden, Maryland, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 29, 1938, to the late Cleo D. Joiner, Sr and Georgia L. Pope Joiner-Cooper.

In 1957, George graduated from Central High School, Louisville, KY. He went on to graduate from Kentucky State College (University), Frankfurt, KY in 1962. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was initiated into the Fraternity on December 8, 1961. After graduation, he enlisted in the Armed Services and served his military service in many locations. He was honorably discharged in 1964 and relocated to Washington, DC, where he was employed by the Federal Government as State Director of Veterans Affairs. He retired after over 30 years of government service.

He loved the many times he spent vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, and in his retirement years, he enjoyed social gatherings, reading, art collections, traveling, and socializing with his friends. George was also a devoted Washington Redskins fan. He was especially delighted when his children and grandchildren came to visit.

George and former partner, JoyAnne Page had one child together. He and his former spouse, Heberlean Bass-Joiner had two children together and remained in touch throughout their lives. Later in life, George was formerly married to Miriam Conner Joiner.

George is survived by sons Jonathan Erich Joiner of Cincinnati, Ohio and Christopher David Joiner of Raleigh, NC; daughter Anitria Yvette Joiner Roberts (Loring) of Durham, NC; three grandchildren, Mariah Taylor Romero (fiancée Ty Mossburg) of Charlotte, NC; Kynnedy Janelle Roberts and Camden Qwincy Roberts both of Durham, NC; brothers Percy Lott Joiner, Reverend Gerald Jerome Joiner (Lynne), Pierce Stoudemier, Douglass P. Cooper and sisters Doris Joiner Kirkpatrick, Iris Joiner McPhail;, Patricia Joiner Williams, Monica Michelle Joiner, Melissa Martinez all of Louisville, KY; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by brother Cleo Joiner, Jr, and sisters Verna Jean Joiner and Constance M. Taylor Cooper.

Military burial will follow in the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623.
