Born on May 18, 1934, Hannah Bernice Nelson, affectionately called Bernice, or Bern, was the third child of five. She was born to the late Jamima Blackwell, and the late Charles Fullard. Bernice was very active as a child, as well as in her adult life before her health began to fail. She accepted Christ at a young age and attended St. John AME Church, located in Selma, NC., with her family.

Bernice attended Richard B Harrison High School, Selma, NC. Afterwards, she relocated to the Washington, DC area, where she met the love of her life and devoted husband, Luther Nelson. They became inseparable and were soon joined in Holy Matrimony and remained there until her passing.

Bernice worked at Dupont Laundry and for Peoples Drugstore, which is now known as CVS, during her career. This classy Lady was known to have the Midas touch in terms of decorating, and she was also known to be very fashionable. Whatever she put her hand to, it was always done gracefully and efficiently.

Although she did not have children of her own, she was like a second mother to her nieces. She taught them a lot about life, including how to dress, how to cook, how to be respectful, and yes, even how to dance. She loved her family, and had many friends, who loved her dearly, including her life-long friend, Mrs. Jeanette Turner, who had been her faithful friend since grade school.

Bernice was preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Doris Hale, Minnie Parker, and Edna Catherine Williams; her brother, Charles (June) Fullard; her mother, Jamima Blackwell; her father, Charles Fullard. She leaves to cherish her memory a very devoted husband of 67 years, Luther Nelson; her nieces, Linda Walker (Sylvester), of Accokeek, MD, Tiffany Danielle Williams of Benson, NC; nephews, Sean Sarvis of Accokeek, MD, and Donald Maurice Dupree of Fayetteville, NC; cousins Sears Merchant and Susan Mack, and a host of other family members and friends. She will be very much missed by all.
