Obituary for Harry Arnold Carroll

Reverend Harry Arnold Carroll, the fifth child born to the late Henry Carroll, Sr., and Viola Juanita Johnson-Carroll on August 28, 1944, in Halifax County, North Carolina, was called by his Heavenly Father on the early morning of October 30, 2022. Reared in a loving family with five other siblings, the family attended St. Elizabeth Methodist Church in the rural community of White Oak. Harry obtained his early, and high school, education at the dual complex of Thomas Sewell Inborden School, in Enfield, North Carolina, where he first met the love of his life, Mattie Louise Whitaker. They were married in East Orange, New Jersey in 1967, and a year and a half later were blessed with their only son, Gary, who was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

During his high school years, he had a thirst for learning, showed strong leadership skills, and academic excellence, resulting in being inducted into The National Honor Society, and brought the same skills to North Carolina Central University where he obtained his undergraduate degree in chemistry. Remembering his college years, he would proudly reminisce about being a civil rights protestor staging a sit-in at one of the segregated southern Woolworth lunch counters during the 60’s in an effort to change segregationist policies.

After graduation, many companies in various states offered Harry employment, but he chose to accept a job in New Jersey where his brother, Bob resided, and work as a chemist for DuPont in Parlin, New Jersey; later, DuPont in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he retired in 2000, after working 33 years. Following retirement, Harry worked as a substitute teacher for Fayetteville Public Schools until he entered Shaw University, Raleigh, NC, and completed his graduate studies in theology. In 1999, he was ordained and became an Associate Pastor to Reverend David Williams at Shiloh United Church of Christ, Fayetteville, before moving to Maryland in 2015. While in Maryland, Harry joined his son’s environmental company, CEC Environmental, and thoroughly enjoyed attending his granddaughters’ dance performances at Star Makers Academy of Dance in Bowie, Maryland. Papa Carroll, as affectionately known to the dance family, was a shining light at all of the dance activities and at their local school events.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Jessie Bernadine Davis and Ulysses “Deloyd Carroll “Tom”. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his devoted son and daughter in-law, Gary and Melanye Maclin-Carroll, his two precious granddaughters, Cayla Marlisa and Celina Melanye, one sister, Mildred Mallissie Gray of DeBary, FL, two brothers; Henry Carroll, Jr. “Bob” (Martha Elaine), Wayne Cornel Carroll, of Enfield, NC, and a host of in-laws from the Whitaker family members, and loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
