Herman Lee Motley, Jr., son of the late Elizabeth and Herman Lee Motley, Sr. was born on April 22, 1932. He departed this life quietly on Thursday, April 14, 2022.

Herman, also known as June Motley, was born in Danville, Virginia. He graduated from John M. Langston High School in 1950 and the attended Virginia State College for one year. He decided that he would voluntarily serve his country before they drafted him. He entered into the Air Force in 1952, where he became a Serviceman working on top secret communications. During his 26-year military career in the U.S. Air Force, he served at various places overseas and in the U.S. While in the military, he served as a Worshipful Master of the Cherry Blossom Lodge #42 located in Tokyo, Japan working under the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Washington, D.C.

While he was in Washington, DC, he met the lovely Dorothy Outler aka his Georgia Peach and married her on June 2, 1962 after a wonderful courtship. They traveled the country and the world to places such as Germay, Japan, and Turkey. While serving in Weisbaden, Germay, his son, Herman Motley III, was born and his heart, Andrea Lynn Motley was born in Key West, FL. After retirement from the Air Force, Herman got his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland and got a job with the Maryland Corrections & Parole Office. After 14 years of service with the Maryland State Department, he retired in 1994.

Herman accepted Jesus Christ at a young age. After retirement he began worshipping at Shiloh Baptist Church of Landover, MD where he served as the Church Trustee and Senior Usher for 15 years. In 2004, he joined Emmanual Baptist Church in Laurel, MD, where he continued worshipping and serving the Lord. He served his church faithfully and God called him home from labor to reward.

Herman had several pastimes, which included listening to his favorite jazz and blues artists, fishing, and sports of any kind. He had a great sense of humor and would often say the most clever things. People around him never knew what he would say next, but we know that it would be good. He loved to read and read the newspaper cover to cover every day. As his body aged, his mind didn't, he remained sharp until the end and could engage you on politics, current events, and had a long memory for which could be relied upon for family history. He had a generous heart and loved giving where there was a need. He had a positive influence on the lives he touched.

Herman was a devoted and proud grandfather to his two grandsons, Brandon and Brian. He loved watching them grow into fine young men, as he was always there to encourage and give them advice.

Herman leaves to cherish his memory a son, Herman Motley III, (Denise), a daughter, Andrea Lynn Motley, grandsons, Brandon Najee Motley and Brian Alan Motley, daughter-in-law Angela Bledsoe (Gerald), sisters-in-law, Cecelia Butts (Herbert) and Nona Blue, and a brother-in-law, Charles Peacock, cousin Patrica Mathis (Anthony), dear friend Prince Hawkins and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
