James “Jimmy” Edward Hackley, the undeniably handsome, outspoken, wisecracking, doting husband of Charlotte, died Sunday, December 11, 2022, at Doctors Community Medical Center in Landover, MD, from lung cancer.

Born February 16, 1937, Jimmy was the middle son of Will Mason Hackley and Bessie Mae (White) Hackley. He was raised in Rixeyville, VA, but set out for Washington, DC, in his late teens. He started his employment with the U.S. Department of the Navy. Finding the office job too confining, he pursued and achieved his childhood dream of driving tractor trailers. He passed all DOT tests and obtained his commercial driving license. An experienced tractor trailer driver for 33 years, he declared he was his own boss on the road. A proud Teamster of Local 639, he drove for major trucking companies, ABF, Preston, McLean, Roadway, to name a few. He won numerous awards as outstanding driver for safe long distance and local driving.

Jimmy married Charlotte Patricia Booze on August 24, 1968, in Washington, DC, at Greater New Hope Baptist Church where he also was baptized. He and his beloved Pat, as he called her, eventually settled in Forestville, MD, where he was the “Mayor” and unofficial Neighborhood Watch of Daniel Drive for 36 years. A proud homeowner, he delighted in entertaining, maintaining his yard, and nurturing his flower and vegetable gardens. He never hesitated to share his bounty with others.

He had varied interests. One was collecting the latest electronics such as cameras, I-Phones, computers, and anything trending. Once he knew someone shared an interest with him, he tested their knowledge to see if they were as much of an expert as he was. He was an avid Costco shopper, steadfast “The Young and the Restless” viewer, and fervent Baltimore Ravens fan.

Jimmy valued family. He was always a fiercely loyal protector of Pat, his mother, son, aunts, brothers, and friends. He was proud of the accomplishments of his nieces and nephews as well as his friends’ children. Along with Pat, he took great pleasure in being the proud godparent of LJ (Lynn Jr.), Devin (his buddy), and Leila Hackley.

Survivors include his devoted wife and constant companion of 56 years, Charlotte; son James Anthony Hackley; sister Barbara Williams (Elfonza); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Leroy Mason Hackley, Sr.; Melvin Hackley, Sr.; Earl Hackley, Sr.; Allen Colbert, Oliver Colbert, and Gene Lee Colbert; sisters Betty Ann Gray and Charlotte Colbert.
