Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Jodie Nicole Spurlock Gaymon
October 28, 1971 - May 14, 2022
Jodie Nicole Spurlock Gaymon, 50, of Clinton, MD, answered the call from her Heavenly Father from labor to reward on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
A native of Petersburg, Virginia, Jodie was born as the middle child to the late Diane E. Spurlock, on October 28, 1971. Jodie accepted Christ, and was baptized, along with her sister, at an early age at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. At Tabernacle, Jodie attended Sunday School and was a member of the choir. As a young child, Jodie was energetic, outgoing, and a friend to many.
Upon graduation from Petersburg High School in 1989, Jodie furthered her education, attending Virginia State University (VSU), and obtaining a bachelor's degree in Social Work with a concentration in Criminal Justice, in May 1994. Upon her graduation from VSU, Jodie spent a short time working in New York before relocating and settling into the DC/Maryland area. Jodie served in a number of roles within the D.C. government and more recently served as a Policy Analyst within the Office of Administrative Review, Appeals, and Hearing within the Department of Human Services.
In an agency-wide statement sent to employees announcing Jodie’s transition, one of the directors from the Department of Human Services wrote: “Her colleagues and supervisors describe Jodie as a model employee: professional, personable, funny, kind, and generous. She had a signature laugh, and you always heard her before you saw her! She was the lifeline of the Office of Administrative Review/Hearings Team and will be missed immensely. When she worked at the Fort Davis Service Center, the Program Manager nicknamed her “Butterfly” because of Jodie’s ability to socialize with everyone.”
In recent years, Jodie was an active worshipper at Life Covenant Christian Ministries of Accokeek, MD, and she enjoyed tuning in to hear her brother preach at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Sterling, VA, as well. One of Jodie’s favorite scriptures was Psalm 100, and she believed in making a joyful noise unto the Lord. She also loved Psalm 23, and she had her children recite it every day while traveling to school. In recent months, Jodie found solace in Psalm 91, and she had it displayed on the wall as part of her daily reading and affirmation.
Jodie was known to many as a wife, mother, sister, auntie, and friend, and it was quite apparent that she fully embraced her God-given purpose as a genuine cheerleader for others. On September 9, 2006, Jodie married the love of her life Brandon Gaymon. Together, over the last 15 years, they built a family and established a home that was a haven of happiness and hope, with lots of good food and joyful fellowship. Jodie enjoyed cooking, traveling, shopping, and hosting family gatherings. Her home was an open door to many for celebrations. Fun-loving, lover of music, especially oldies-but-goodies and concerts; Jodie lived life to the fullest.
Left to cherish her legacy and memory are her devoted husband of 15 years, Brandon Gaymon, a SE DC native, and daughters Kaylah Gaymon and Laiah Gaymon, son Blake Gaymon, a grandson, Kaide all of Clinton, MD; brother Gregory L. Spurlock, Sr. (Lottie) of South Riding, VA; sister Stacie M. Spurlock of Petersburg, VA; mother-in-law Joyce G. Moreland of Clinton, MD, sister-in-law Charlitta Bragg (Ron) of LaPlata, MD, brother-in-law Charles Moreland of SE DC, aunts June B. Johnson of Alexandria, VA, Eunice A. Jacques (Vince) of Oxon Hill, MD, an uncle Barry E. Batts (Monica) of Spokane, WA; 94-year grandfather John F. Batts, Sr. of Petersburg, VA, great uncles Samuel Batts, Sr. of Petersburg, VA, and Emmanuel Batts, Sr. of Petersburg, VA, great aunt Mary B. Harwell of Petersburg, VA, nephew Brandon Tucker of Petersburg, VA, niece Jaquay Spurlock of Petersburg, VA, niece Ivana Spurlock of Burlington, NC, nephew Gregory L. A host of cousins and extended family and friends, as well as godchildren, will also cherish her memory and live out her legacy. To know Jodie was to love her. May we all be inspired by her wonderful life of generosity, love, joy, and helping others.
