John Edwin Ogburn, Jr. was born December 29, 1942, in Mecklenburg County South Hill, Virginia, to the late John Edwin Ogburn, Sr. and Rena Jones Ogburn. He was the 2nd of 3 children and the only boy. He has eternally joined his parents, eldest sister Catherine Ogburn Dandridge, sister-in-law Mary Paige Boyd, and four brothers-in-law: Russell E. Dandridge, James O. Evans “Bubba”, Alphonso Lee Wynn, and Robert Boyd.

John was baptized at Amity Baptist Church in South Hill, Virginia at an early age. He began his education in Mecklenburg County Public Schools and graduated from East End High School in 1963. While attending high school, John drove the school bus where he met his high school sweetheart Maranda “Christine” Wynn. The two were married on July 4, 1964; therafter, the couple moved to Washington, DC making this their home. From this union one daughter Erika René was born.

John began his masonry career working with John Meredith whom he worked with until Mr. Meredith’s death. John was good working with his hands and could fix almost anything, even if he had to take it apart and put it back together. Along with his willing spirit to help anyone in need, John and his cousin Deforce Carroll started their own business. They worked together until retirement.

John’s motto was “do it right the first time!” He carried this throughout his career and life. John was very meticulous about his home, car, lawn, and garden. Others noticed his work ethics, along with his craftsmanship and asked for his services. He became the neighborhood Handyman. His work can be seen throughout the neighborhood. He loved spending time with his family and friends and never turned down a good Bid Whist card game.

On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, John took ill and was admitted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center where he departed his earthly life on Friday, December 2, 2022. John was an incredible husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He leaves to cherish his memories: wife of 58 years Christine; daughter Erika Broadus (Derrick); sister Teresa Ogburn-Evans; two sisters-in-law: Sylvia Wynn and Jeanette Scott Wynn; brother-in-law Calvin Wynn; two aunts: Alice “Marie” Riddick and Juanita Ogburn; one uncle: George Johnson, three Goddaughters: Alicia Brown; Tiffany Kendall, and LaTasha Roy-Sterrett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

John was a man of heart, compassion, integrity, and loyalty; he will truly be missed.
