Ella Juanita Douglas Lancaster, beloved wife of Clarence R. Lancaster, Sr., departed this life at home on September 17, 2022, surrounded by family. Juanita was the daughter of the late John and Mary Inez Douglas, and brother of the late Horace Broadus.

Born in Washington, DC, on August 6, 1927, Juanita was known to her family and friends as “Nita” or “Biddy.” She spent most of her early life in the Deanwood section of Washington, DC. Juanita attended the DC public schools and graduated from the National Institute of Practical Nursing in 1947. At an early age, she joined the First Baptist Church of Deanwood, the junior choir, and the Baptist Youth People’s Union. In later years, Juanita transferred her membership to the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church. She was employed by the Veterans Administration, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the K-Mart Corporation from which she retired.

Juanita and Clarence were married on January 11, 1948, at her late parents’ home in Washington, DC. To their union came six children: Linda Gray-Jeffries; Mary L. Waller; Clarence R. Lancaster Jr. (Terry), deceased; Toni L. Washington; Karen L. Mason; and Clarence R. Lancaster, Jr. (Chip), deceased. In 1962, Clarence and Juanita moved their family to Midland, Virginia, where they built a home and started a small farm. Juanita loved animals and over the years, she had many dogs that she spoiled rotten. She also had great patience when she discovered new additions to her children’s menagerie of in-house pets. Juanita, a very devoted wife and mother, took great pride in her family and home. She enjoyed a variety of hobbies, such as sewing, knitting, reading, and gardening. Like her father, Juanita's "green thumb" was always visible from the multiple flower beds surrounding her home to her indoor plants (particularly, orchids).

In addition to her four daughters, Juanita leaves her husband of 74 years to mourn her passing, as well as one son-in-law, Jerry Jeffries. She also leaves seven grandchildren (Kenneth, Tamara, Orion, Reva, Kelley, Marcus, and Jessica); seven great grandchildren (Briana, Lamont Jr., Teryn, Kali, Auset, Billie, and Marleigh); three great-great grandchildren (Anthony Jr., Leniyah, and Lamani); a host of devoted nieces and nephews; and five very special friends (Clarence and Lois Johnson, Virginia Lancaster, and Wilma and Vicky Nance).
