Judith Carol Gunter (affectionately known as Judi) was born to the late Ralph and Bernice Gunter on April 26, 1959 in The Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was one of four daughters, and the younger twin sister of JoAnne.
Judi attended public schools in the District of Columbia, graduating from McKinley High School in 1977 where she was in the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Judi started her federal career while attending high school in the morning and heading to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in the afternoon. Upon graduation, she started working full-time at OPM. She later took a position with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), retiring in January 2015 after 37-years of federal service. She enjoyed her years at the VA and met many colleagues who later became dear friends.
Judi’s early childhood was filled with a close knit family and extended family, including Aunties, “play” sisters, dozens of cousins, special adopted children, and Godchildren. She spent her summers between her grandparents in New York City and Sanford, NC or Girl Scout camp, though her preference was always for New York City. Her mother affectionately called Judi her “city girl.” Some memorable family moments include trips to the World’s Fair in New York City and Canada, trips to Coney Island and rides on the Cyclone roller coast and beach trips to Ocean City/Dewey/Rehoboth beach. At an early age she learned the word of God attending Sunday school at the Gospel Spreading Church of God in Washington, D.C. She later joined Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church where she was a member of The Trammell Choral and The Courtesy Club.
Judi always loved family gatherings for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Pokeno game night. She looked forward to traveling with family and friends to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and casino trips to Las Vegas and Harrington.
She was a person of great generosity, showering gifts to family and those she loved. She had your back no matter what the situation and was always in your corner.
Judi leaves to cherish her memory her sisters: Linda Hayes (Gary), JoAnne Ransome, and Brenda Garnes; nieces and nephews: Brittany (Keith), Olivia, Asia, David (Benny), Joseph, D’Aundria; great nieces and nephew: Gloria, Leo, Lillian, and Amelia; dear aunts and uncle: Alberta Bryant, Mary Gunter Tyson, and Winston Burrows, Jr.; “play” sisters: Virginia Stancil, Bobbi Mott Grant, and Bonita V. White; “play” sons: Erick Jackson and Davon Little; a devoted cousin William Marks and a host of other cousins and friends to carry on her memory.
