Kendolyn Vanessa Poole Smith was born July 26, 1960 in Woodruff, S.C, to Martha Degraphenreid and Roger Poole. She departed this life to her eternal home on May 18, 2022. She is survived by her 3 children Darian Smith (Amie Smith), Ranada Smith (Justin Barr), and Thomas Smith. She has 3 grandsons Damion, Ramon and Ramir, and 4 granddaughters Janiya, Iyanna, Chanel, and London. She has a sister Sherylon Starks, god-sister Carolyn Braddy and 2 brothers Darin White, and William Oglesby. She has 3 Aunts, 1 Uncle and a host of cousins and many friends.
Kendolyn was raised in the Trinidad NE area of Washington DC, by her mother and step-father Roosevelt White. Here she participated in track & field, softball, basketball, and various clubs and organizations. It was during these years that she formed life-long bonds and friendships. She excelled in school, graduating from Spingarn Senior High with certificates in ROTC.
She attended Knoxville College in Tennessee. Soon after she enlisted in the U.S. Army, where she met and married Randy Smith and they started their family, She was assigned to the Dept. of Army Legislative Affairs. After 5 years in the Army, she received a Honorable Medical Discharge due to a diagnosis of Sarcoidosis. After dealing with years of illness and parting ways with her husband, God turned her path towards VANATA, new friends and a new life direction.
She went on to work at the United States Army Legal Services Agency as a paralegal, where she got promoted to take on challenges at the Dept. Of Homeland Security Legislative Affairs. While working there she met and married Russel Jefferson. After completing this milestone in her career, she moved to a position at the Corps of Engineers, where she would retire. Even in retirement she continued to remain an active member of various Associations such as the National Assoc. Of Black Veterans and NAACP.
Kendolyn was a strong-willed and loving person. She loved hard, and gave her all to every person, and everything she did in her life. She was a die-hard Redskin fan with her burgundy and gold on faithfully. Her smile was contagious, and she always had a funny joke to tell. Nothing filled a room quite like her cooking, or hearing her sing a song that she likes. Her life was a shining example of setting goals for yourself and taking the necessary steps to reach them. It was always important for her family and friends to come together, whether for a holiday, dinner, cookout, or even traveling abroad. Her memory will continue to be a source of love, joy and encouragement to us all.
