Obituary for Marion D. McGill

Marion Evelyn McGill, nee Demmings, daughter of the late Alonzo Demmings and Adele Lancaster was born on October 25, 1930 in Washington, DC and passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, December 18, 2022. Her sister, Jacqueline Coe preceded her in death.

Marion grew up in Washington, DC with her best friend, Marie Buncombe-Dodd, and was given the nickname “Pansy”. She was educated in the DC public school system, where she graduated from Dunbar Senior High School. She attended Howard University for her undergraduate education, where she met her friends for life, Minnie Fitzhugh and Vinna Freeman. Marion received her Masters Degree from George Washington University. Marion had a successful career in the DC public school system for over 30 years as a beloved health, physical education and dance teacher. Marion last taught at the former Hart Junior High School (now Hart Middle School). She was an active member of the Banneker Social Dance Club and the DC American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (DC AAPHERD). Marion began attending Tabor Presbyterian Church, which later became Northeastern Presbyterian Church. In 2000, Marion joined the startup of Prince George’s Community Church and attended until her health no longer allowed it.

Marion’s aunt introduced her to Kelly McGill, Sr. while he was serving in the Marine Corps. The two married on March 3, 1956. They initially settled in Washington, DC and later, moved to Glenarden, MD where they raised a family. Two children were born to this union: Karen and Kelly, Jr.

After Marion’s retirement in the early 1980s, she returned to DC Public Schools to help write curriculum for the health, physical education and dance departments. She also volunteered for the youth after-school program at her church. She was an avid patron of the arts and enjoyed teaching jazzercise and dance classes in the community and church. She performed with the Tappers in Motion group associated with the SAGE program at Prince George’s Community College. Marion enjoyed traveling with her friends and was privileged to travel across the United States, Germany, Cote D’Ivoire, and Ghana. She was a loving, involved grandmother to her grandchildren.

Marion is preceded in death by her late husband, Kelly McGill, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Karen McGill-Butler (Christopher), Kelly McGill, Jr. (Daphne); a beloved cousin, Arnita Williams; three grandchildren, Erin Simmons (Jereme), Kiah McGill, Makayla McGill; two great-grandchildren, Kendall Simmons, Camryn Simmons; best friend Marie Buncombe-Dodd; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
