Obituary for Mark Anthony Coleman

Mark Anthony Coleman was born October 1, 1942 in Washington, DC to the late Charles and Leona Coleman. Mark was the youngest of 4 siblings that was blessed by this union. Mark ascended to his eternal home on Monday, August 22, 2022 at home surrounded by his beloved wife, Debrah.

Mark attended D.C. Public schools, and graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in 1958. Upon graduation, Mark began his working career with a local moving company. However, his major career was in law enforcement. He joined the U.S. Federal Protective Service in 1960 as a guard, and later, due to congressional legislation, he and others were promoted to Federal Police Officers. In his capacity as an Officer, Mark assisted the United States Secret Service in guarding several Vice Presidents, and President Ronald Reagan during his inauguration. He even guarded James Brown when he came to Washington DC to give a concert. For his outstanding service over the years, he received many awards and commendations, such as Desert Storm Citation Medal, Presidential Commendations, Outstanding Performance Certificates, Expert Marksmanship Certificate, and various Letters of Commendations.

After serving 30 years of service as an Officer, he retired October 1, 1994. During the early years of his retirement, Mark worked as a Security Officer at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception; as well as various positions at UPS, Sears and Lowes.

Later, Mark furthered his education by taking classes in microprocessors, and mini computers at TESST Electronics school. He graduated June 19, 1986.

Mark was a devout Catholic who had dedicated his life to God at an early age. He was a long standing member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Washington, DC. From a previous union, Mark was blessed with two children - daughter, Wanda Maria Coleman; and his son Steven Anthony Coleman (deceased). Mark was a dedicated father to his children and grandchildren.

August 30, 2003, Mark Coleman and Debrah Mahoney were united in marriage. They enjoyed a full life together visiting various locations such as Atlantic City, Las Vegas, cruise to the Bahamas, going to Redskins games, and going to church together. After church they always enjoyed going to their favorite coffee house, Starbucks – Mocha latte for Mark, and Toffee nut latte for Debrah. Another favorite pastime for Mark and Debrah was hand dancing, and looking at Gunsmoke. They were blessed to enjoy retirement life together. Debrah and Mark were true sole mates, and he will be truly missed by his wife, and all those who loved him - which are many.

Mark enjoyed good soul and jazz music, and good horror movies. In his youth he played the guitar, and formed a band with his nephews. He was experienced in karate, and moved up to 3rd Degree Black Belt. He actually introduced his nieces and nephews to martial arts training at his home in DC. He enjoyed gambling, such as slots, and lottery. He also enjoyed a good soul food dinner. And, if anyone knows Mark, he really enjoyed anything chocolate. Everyone who has been around Mark knows he has the “gift of gab”; and his very humorous way of telling a story, that would leave you laughing at his jokes. He was always laughing and smiling. He also enjoyed a good game of bid whist. Finally, we can’t forget that Mark was a huge fan of the Washington Redskins (Commander).

Mark is survived by his loving and devoted wife Debrah. He also leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Wanda Blalock (Tony); sister-in-law, Lawon Mahoney; two grandchildren, Bryce (Yessica); and Brandon (Taylor); three great grandchildren, Taylor, Amari, and Quincy. Mark was preceded in death by his two brothers: Charles Coleman, and Thomas Coleman; his sister, Mildred Coleman; his son, Steven Coleman; and his beloved mother and father, Leona and Charles Coleman. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
