Samuel Miller Hollomand

Samuel was born in Washington, DC on April 28, 1928 to Walter and Blanche Hollomand. He grew up in his mother’s church, Mckendree-Simms United Methodist, formerly known as Simms Memorial Methodist and his father’s church, Shiloh Baptist. Most of his adult life he was a member of Hugh’s United Memorial Church. Samuel joined his wife Mary at Embry A.M.E church under the pastorate of Dr. Reverend Edna C. Jenkins.

Samuel completed Armstrong Senior High School in Washington, DC. He then attended what is now known as the Berkeley School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Samuel played saxophone in the U.S. Army Band while serving an active duty enlistment. After returning to the DC area, Samuel performed with several local jazz groups, most notably, the Rick Henderson Band at the Howard Theatre. His greatest accomplishment came to fruition when Samuel met and later married Mary Day on June 20, 1962. From this union, they were blessed with two children.

Samuel retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1985 with thirty years of federal government service. His hobbies included photography, music, computer technology and travel. As a testament to his technological abilities, Samuel, at the age of 93, built three advanced gaming computers. Samuel maintained his love for music by mentoring several youth in the saxophone and piano. Samuel and Mary traveled the Caribbean, Israel, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and most of the United States including visiting their daughter on tour with Disney on Ice. Samuel particularly enjoyed traveling with the DC Teachers Union and served as the group’s photographer.

Despite his mounting medical challenges, Samuel served as an inspiration and established many close relationships with fellow patients and his medical team. His patient profile was featured in Medstar Home Health Care promotional materials. Samuel was passionate about life and loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Samuel Hollomand. Samuel is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Day Hollomand, his daughter Lisa Hollomand, son Larry Hollomand; daughter-in-law Elsa Hollomand, grandchildren Elijah and Sanai Virachittevin, and beloved family and friends.
