A time to Be Born
Shirley Idella Johnson-Cherry affectionately known as Penny was born in Washington D.C. on September 5, 1957. She comes from a large close-knit family being the sixth of seven children born to the late William and Gloria Johnson. Shirley entered eternal peace on October 17, 2022, surrounded by family at the age of 65.

A time to Learn
As a child, Shirley attended C.W. Harris Elementary and loved to jump double dutch, hopscotch and play jacks with her sisters and cousins. She graduated from H.D. Woodson high school. Shirley loved spending time with her grandkids, planting flowers, hosting summer parties, casinos and was a huge Tina Turner and Dallas Cowboy fan. She also loved helping people and never turned anyone away who needed a home. Her favorite color was blue.

A time to Serve
At the age of seventeen Shirley met Lawrence Cherry, they married in 1996. Together they raised three children. In her young adult years Shirley worked as an administrative assistant at the U.S. Department of Labor and Federal Aviation Administration. She retired as a carpenter at the Washington Convention Center. Shirley loved God and in her later years gave her life to Christ. She had a close relationship with God and would often speak of him.

A time to Mourn
Shirley leaves behind many wonderful memories that will be forever cherished by her loving three children, Cyril, Tilya, and James Cherry; grandkids, Diamond and Fernando Alston; brother, Richard Johnson; sisters, Beverly Johnson, Alfreda Rouse, Deborah Johnson, and Gloria Pippins; brother-in-law, Ronnie Rouse; sisters-in-law, Vivian Rose and

Jade Cherry; goddaughter, Deborah L. Johnson; godsons Arrande Blake and Maurice Young and host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Shirley was proceeded in death by her husband Lawrence C. Cherry; parents Gloria and William Johnson; brothers William (Junior) and Isaac Johnson, and sister Cynthia Butler; mother and father-in-law Chestener and James Cherry and brothers-in-law, Larry Cherry and Edward Rose.
